Near the Accademia in Florence there is a great Place to enjoy simple food and spectacular cake!

There is a place, easily missed in Florence, which is not part of the mad tourist rush to the great museums of this most visited city. A local neighborhood of bars and shops selling anything and everything and where you can even get your bike fixed. In amongst all of this normality is a local jaunt, with several tables and chairs tucked around a corner and down the back where you can eat really well, drink some excellent local wine and then feast on some of the best chocolate torte (cake) you will eat anywhere.

Such places exist because the people that create them are born to this trade; born to feed us well and nurture us with honest food that has come to define a particular place. These people are the main reason we keep going back to our favorite restaurant or bar, or pub. The first time I walked into Osteria de L’Ortolano, I was initially attracted to the shelves groaning under the weight of an amazing array of bottled, homemade sauces you could easily throw on pasta, and mushrooms and truffles of various types demanding my respect. I then turned my attention to the cold cuts on display and quickly saw the quality of everything here down to the cheeses and spreads and even the bread.

It was then that Marta introduced herself and her wonderful Osteria with an infectious smile and the sweep of her hand. Here was a world that she and her husband had created with hard work and an honesty that had me smiling. It’s a simple world of pre-prepared dishes of exquisite quality that you simply buy by pointing, along with any number of side dishes – if you’re looking for 5-star cuisine you will be disappointed but if you want a traditional osteria with an Aladdin’s cave filled with delectable goodies, you have come to the right place. And I guarantee, time allowing, you will return again!

If your taste towards eating absolutely, mouthwatering deserts then you have come to the best place in Florence. Because this place is the home of the most delicious and wicked chocolate torte you will ever eat and it’s the creation of Massimo and he has named it Torta Martare as a tribute to his lovely wife. Just to tempt your taste buds imagine four different dark chocolates of the highest quality and each with around 75% coco content blended together to form the base of this masterpiece. The rest of the procedure can be explained to you by Massimo himself when you pop in to enjoy a meal, a glass of wine and then top it off with a slice of chocolate paradise. Their range of homemade biscuits will grab your attention next as will their panforte, deliberately made softer and more flavorsome than the original Sienese version.  As I said, you will be back with your friends. Oh and the prices; well they will just have you smiling and ordering more wine!  A salute Marta e Massimo.

Osteria de L’Ortolano – Via degli Alfani, 91r. Firenze – Phone:055 239 6466 – (closed on Sunday) – opens at 10am every other day.
