Venetian Cicchetti and delicious seafood pasta make up an impressive menu.

Enough of history, as important and amazing as it is, one needs to eat and in Venice that is being bombarded by an onslaught of tourism, eating well is becoming more and more difficult in this mesmerising city on the sea. A rule of thumb anywhere is to eat where the locals eat and in Venice that means eating cicchetti; bite size, delicious nibbles that is this town’s version of tapas! One of the best places to enjoy such a meal is at the Osteria Al Mascaron in the Castello district, further away from the maddening crowds in Piazza San Marco.

In 1978 Gigi Vianello returned to Venice after years of living in Paris. After a time he found a forlorn little inn which he turned into his Osteria al Mascaron. He successfully re-introduced a more traditional Venetian menu to a city that was slowly losing its cultural traditions, and where hamburgers had begun to rear their ugly presence while adding an air of the “Brasserie” to his place. People of all sorts come to eat at Osteria al Mascaron and if you like to “people watch” then this is the place to do it.

The place has become known for its lobster pasta but I would avoid it because of the price and the small portions of lobster served. I’d be looking at enjoying a local wine over a plate of their seafood spaghetti, a much better choice, and a selection of their excellent cicchetti.

Now you’re talking!

Osteria Al Mascaron – Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa, Castello district – Telephone 041 522 5995 – open Monday to Saturday from 12 midday to 3pm and from 7pm to 11pm (closed on Sunday)
