Today Osteria Francescana in Modena is considered the World’s Best Restaurant.

It is a mecca for gourmet travellers from around the world and they come to this restaurant owned and run by Chef Massimo Bottura in Modena, Italy to be seduced, tempted and at times overwhelmed by his gastronomic creations. Or so I’m told so one need’s to check the pedigree before being seduced and this place is not for the faint hearted or those travelling Italy on a budget.

This osteria is rated as the world’s best restaurant in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants by Restaurant magazine in 2016. It was also second best in 2015 and third best in 2013 and 2014. The first two positions in 2014 were won by Noma and El Celler de Can Roca respectively.

It has been awarded a rating of three stars by the Michelin Red Guide and holds the first position on the Italian food guide l’Espresso – Ristoranti d’Italia with a score of 20/20. That is a pedigree worthy of royalty in the world of eating and it is a very cynical and competitive world to say the least. In Modena good food and good eating is synonymous with the history of the city and the producers of cheeses, vegetables and meats in the surrounding countryside; Bottura is drawing from the very best foods that Italy has to offer to make his menu and he does it with variations upon Italian dishes that have never really migrated beyond Italy.

So yes, Italy can boast the best of something and it’s no surprise it is about food. Bravo!
